These works represent vessels or vehicles which seem to be marooned in some subterranean or domestic setting, awaiting new occupants for possible journeys beyond the confines of the gallery space. They use encrusted, embellished surfaces to convey a sense of travel and exploration.

Sweetheart Grotto (2017) is a fragile, mysterious realm which invites the viewer to dream. Encrusted with pearlescent seashells and crystals its glittering, brittle surface suggests the possibility of journeys to other worlds and times. Alongside these natural forms lies the accumulated plastic detritus from some polluted Sargasso Sea together with a curious traveller, saint or pilgrim on their way to somewhere (or nowhere) in particular. The shells used in the construction of this piece were specially collected from the shoreline at RSPB Titchwell in North Norfolk and their worn and pitted features add their own unique source of wonder.

For Untitled (2009) the pargeted skin of an old house becomes another repository. Lop-sided, patched up and smoothed over its sagging lines, marks and scars reveal a process of change over time, and suggest a point of entry or threshold to another kind of space.
